The Chargers spent real capital to be 32 picks early on Solomon Byrd, and the board is going to hold them to it. A near-flawless weekend of work, and a A- to cap it.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The Melton pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Bottom line, with Chop Robinson leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get a disruptor off the edge, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 2 slot with a little surplus value in Jackson Powers-Johnson. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Xavier Worthy in No. 62 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Blake Corum in the 69th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Max Melton at pick 105 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing DeWayne Carter in the 110th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They did well to land Jarrian Jones in the 140th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Dallin Holker at the Round 5 slot is the proof. The roster fit checks out.
Good price on Layden Robinson in the 181st pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Solomon Byrd this early at pick 225. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Taking Tylan Grable in pick No. 253 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
