Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Jarrian Jones, the No. 136 name on the board, should have been long gone before slot 183.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Rice pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 6 they get a red-zone target to build around. A real need, handled.
A slide stopped in pick 37, with J.J. McCarthy worth more than the price. The roster fit checks out.
They let Xavier Legette come to them and pounced at pick No. 47. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Patrick Paul at the 68th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Brenden Rice this early at No. 70. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Braelon Allen in Round 3, Pick 37 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No drama and no debate, Zak Zinter went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took Matt Goncalves at par in the 107th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Javon Foster in the Round 4 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Justin Eboigbe at slot 129 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They went early on Luke McCaffrey in No. 137, and the value did not follow. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A conviction pick on Myles Cole at the 180th overall pick that the board grades a round light. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Steal is underselling it; Jarrian Jones at pick 183 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Javontae Jean-Baptiste well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Julian Pearl at the 219th pick is the proof. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jaylan Ford at Round 7, Pick 2. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They paid a round early for Josh Proctor in No. 231, more than the board wanted. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
