There is a lot to like until you notice edge rusher is still a hole. The Chargers never got to the one that mattered most.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Wilson. The Barrett pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Rome Odunze at pick 8 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 37, where Cooper DeJean graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
T'Vondre Sweat at No. 43 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Payton Wilson at the Round 3 slot is the proof. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A slide stopped in the 105th pick, with MarShawn Lloyd worth more than the price. The roster fit checks out.
Blake Fisher at slot 110 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Luke McCaffrey at Round 5, Pick 4 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A straight-up fair deal on Tip Reiman at the 181st overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board had cheaper options than Michael Barrett at Round 7, Pick 5, and it noticed. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They paid sticker price for LaDarius Henderson in the 253rd pick, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
