The rest of the league had time to spare on Roger Rosengarten; the Commanders did not wait, grabbing him 43 spots ahead at pick No. 103.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The whole projection now runs through Jayden Daniels; hit there and everything else looks smarter.
The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end still on the board. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 7 they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick 18 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 25th pick they get protection for the quarterback. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the 27th overall pick they get a lockdown presence outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
No edge and no loss on Adonai Mitchell in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
T'Vondre Sweat in Round 2, Pick 7 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Adisa Isaac at the 40th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on T.J. Tampa. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reach on Jaylen Wright in pick No. 67; the board had better options right there. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose DT-EDGE. Maason Smith in Round 3, Pick 25 leaves tight end for later.
They did well to land Trey Benson in pick 99, just ahead of his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A straight-up fair deal on Christian Mahogany at No. 101, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Roger Rosengarten at the 103rd overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Leonard Taylor III in the Round 4 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
They went early on James Williams in No. 110, and the value did not follow. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They took Tommy Eichenberg at par in slot 145, which is nothing to complain about. A minor itch, scratched.
They barely believed it either: Mason McCormick still on the board at pick No. 178. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jalyx Hunt at pick 179 is money in the bank, a S-EDGE taken below his worth. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
Khristian Boyd at the 181st pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Tyrice Knight at the Round 7 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Garret Greenfield in the 222nd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Tyler Owens in Round 7, Pick 7, and that is fine. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
