The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Cowboys reached some 47 spots for Zion Logue, and value like that does not grow back. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The McCaffrey steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a plug-and-play piece up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
In pick 13 they get a building block for the line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the 14th pick they get an anchor for the offensive line, though they paid up to get him. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In pick No. 24 they get a blindside protector at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
They took Edgerrin Cooper at par in No. 42, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Payton Wilson in Round 2, Pick 13 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Xavier Worthy at the 59th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A real head-scratcher, Trey Benson in slot 67 is miles ahead of his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
McKinnley Jackson in pick 95 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Calen Bullock in No. 105 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They paid sticker price for Isaac Guerendo in pick No. 124, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jacob Cowing in Round 5, Pick 6 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jarrian Jones at the Round 5 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid a round early for Grayson Murphy in the 169th overall pick, more than the board wanted. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Luke McCaffrey at slot 174 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A wild overpay on Sam Hartman in Round 6, Pick 44, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The roster fit checks out.
Kimani Vidal at pick No. 233 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Zion Logue in pick 239 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
