Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Commanders spent slot 201 on J.J. Weaver, a name the board had a full 147 spots lower. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Fitzgerald. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
JT Tuimoloau in Round 2, Pick 17 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid sticker price for Donovan Jackson in the 79th pick, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Tez Johnson at the 96th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Steal is underselling it; Andrew Mukuba at pick No. 123 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Dylan Sampson at the Round 5 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They will replay Chris Paul Jr. at slot 161 for years; that is how good the value is. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They left a pile of value on the table to take J.J. Weaver this early at the 201st pick. The roster fit checks out.
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson at the Round 6 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jake Briningstool in Round 7, Pick 13 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jack Kiser in the 236th overall pick, plain and simple. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Ryan Fitzgerald in pick 247 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
