The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched Ollie Gordon II slide 80 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
Reaching for Pegues left real value on the table behind him. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 14 they get a building block for the line, a steep price for the projection. A clean fit for the roster.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tre Harris in pick 38. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Omarion Hampton at the 45th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jayden Higgins at slot 69 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Luke Kandra in the Round 3 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Oronde Gadsden II this early at pick No. 104. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
JJ Pegues at No. 143 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jordan Hancock in the 217th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Steal is underselling it; Kyle Monangai at No. 220 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Ollie Gordon II in the 238th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
