Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Packers were there to profit. Jermod McCoy, the No. 16 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 112th overall pick.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Bottom line, with Mansoor Delane leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
The board fumbled Mansoor Delane all the way to the 45th pick, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Taking Kenyon Sadiq in the Round 2 slot is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They barely believed it either: Sonny Styles still on the board at Round 2, Pick 17. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at the 69th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. The roster fit checks out.
David Bailey in No. 79 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They read the board right and Mike Washington Jr. was the payoff at pick No. 84. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Somehow Spencer Fano was still sitting there in slot 102, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They will replay Jermod McCoy at pick 112 for years; that is how good the value is. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Circle this one: Sam Roush at Round 4, Pick 20 is a fall that decides a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Germie Bernard at pick No. 122 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Steal is underselling it; Jake Slaughter at the Round 5 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
