Hard to follow the map here. The Packers bypassed edge rusher, quarterback and other spots to take Maason Smith at pick 91, a spot they had covered. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. The Wilson pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. The Laube pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with cornerback the one that mattered most.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get a weapon on the perimeter. A real need, handled.
Jackson Powers-Johnson at Round 2, Pick 9 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They paid up for Javon Bullard at No. 57 when waiting would have done the job. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They robbed the room for Payton Wilson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots open.
A reach for Dylan Laube in the 125th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid a round early for Javion Cohen in the 135th overall pick, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No edge and no loss on Omar Speights in Round 6, Pick 28; it is a wash and a sensible one. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Brevyn Spann-Ford at the Round 6 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A straight-up fair deal on BJ Mayes at pick No. 219, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Trey Wedig in slot 246 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
