Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Treydan Stukes, the No. 72 name on the board, should have been long gone before No. 92.
Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Reaching for Payton left real value on the table behind him. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get the heartbeat of the defense at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the 20th overall pick they get a three-down second-level presence, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Treydan Stukes in the 92nd pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Nothing to complain about; Bud Clark went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Charles Demmings at Round 5, Pick 12 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 5 slot, where Tanner Koziol graded well above the range. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Cole Payton in pick No. 180 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
