The real work happened on the phones. The Chiefs fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They will answer for taking OLB-EDGE early while quarterback and edge rusher went begging. That is a linebacker worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
If Solomon pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Ladd McConkey in pick 36, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Xavier Worthy in the 50th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Kingsley Suamataia in Round 2, Pick 23 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Edgerrin Cooper is a better player than the 63rd overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took Ruke Orhorhoro at par in slot 64, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No drama and no debate, Khyree Jackson went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A straight-up fair deal on Christian Mahogany at pick No. 95, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Javon Solomon adds an OLB-EDGE and leaves quarterback and edge rusher untouched.
Ben Sinnott at pick 127 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Roger Rosengarten at pick No. 139 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jacob Cowing at No. 162 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Tanner McLachlan at the Round 6 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Frank Gore Jr.. A need, and now a little less of one.
