New England Patriots

The Patriots finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a A-.

Start where it matters. The Patriots took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. They executed a plan and it shows in the A-.

The Laube reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Getting Magee where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.9 · Pick 9 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 27
J.J. McCarthy in pick No. 9 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Adonai Mitchell · WR · rank 32
Adonai Mitchell at pick 34 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · Malachi Corley · WR · rank 50
They paid sticker price for Malachi Corley in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Kiran Amegadjie · OT · rank 63
A tidy little value on Kiran Amegadjie in slot 68, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 85
Patrick Paul at Round 3, Pick 11 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 105
No edge and no loss on Theo Johnson in the 103rd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.22 · Pick 122 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 109
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Zak Zinter in No. 122. The roster fit checks out.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Dylan Laube · RB · rank 171
A real head-scratcher, Dylan Laube in the 137th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Jordan Magee · LB · rank 161
Jordan Magee at slot 180 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Decamerion Richardson · CB · rank 174
The board fumbled Decamerion Richardson all the way to pick No. 193, and they scooped it up. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Bub Means · WR · rank 228
Bub Means at the 231st pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
