Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Jaylin Simpson, the No. 151 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 6 slot. It washes out to a C+, no better and no worse.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. Every board in the league had Allen lower, and that gap is the story.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 30th pick they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Edgerrin Cooper. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on T'Vondre Sweat at pick 60, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Christian Haynes slid further than he should have, and the 87th overall pick is lovely value for the offensive lineman. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Braelon Allen. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A tidy bit of business in Round 5, Pick 38, where Cedric Johnson graded well above the range. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Jaylin Simpson at slot 191 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Steele Chambers in the Round 7 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
