Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Packers spent the 203rd overall pick on Dwight McGlothern, a name the board had a full 54 spots lower. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C in the wash.
Getting Polk where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They will answer for taking linebacker early while quarterback, tight end and other spots went begging.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
If Quinyon Mitchell and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.27
· Pick 27
· Quinyon Mitchell
· CB
· rank 33
In slot 27 they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.9
· Pick 41
· Kamren Kinchens
· S
· rank 37
They did well to land Kamren Kinchens in Round 2, Pick 9, just ahead of his grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R2.25
· Pick 57
· Edgerrin Cooper
· LB
· rank 58
Edgerrin Cooper at pick 57 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R3.7
· Pick 71
· Payton Wilson
· LB
· rank 70
A want over a need in the 71st pick: Payton Wilson adds a linebacker while quarterback, tight end and other spots keeps waiting.
R3.25
· Pick 88
· Dominick Puni
· OT
· rank 103
Dominick Puni in pick No. 88 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.28
· Pick 91
· Ja'Lynn Polk
· WR
· rank 56
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Ja'Lynn Polk in the Round 3 slot, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.25
· Pick 125
· Dylan Laube
· RB
· rank 146
A real head-scratcher, Dylan Laube in pick No. 125 is miles ahead of his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.35
· Pick 135
· Braelon Allen
· RB
· rank 155
A wild overpay on Braelon Allen in the 135th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.11
· Pick 147
· Christian Jones
· OT
· rank 197
They reached into another round for Christian Jones, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster fit checks out.
R6.28
· Pick 203
· Dwight McGlothern
· CB
· rank 257
Dwight McGlothern at the 203rd pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.42
· Pick 217
· Kenny Logan Jr.
· S
· rank 210
Kenny Logan Jr. at slot 217 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
R6.44
· Pick 219
· Tatum Bethune
· LB
· rank 254
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tatum Bethune in No. 219, miles early. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R7.26
· Pick 246
· Aaron Lewis
· DL-EDGE
· rank 298
They reached a country mile for Aaron Lewis at pick 246, and the board is aghast. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
