When a board-topper like Luke McCaffrey slides to pick No. 195, you do not overthink it, and the Chiefs did not.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The Lovett pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
It is not that Jones is a bad player; it is that the Chiefs had louder needs to answer first. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Worthy at pick No. 51 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
T.J. Tampa at Round 2, Pick 27 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Patrick Paul at the 64th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No drama and no debate, Dominick Puni went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Malik Washington at pick 97 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Johnny Wilson at No. 115 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A conviction pick on Mohamed Kamara at the 116th overall pick that the board grades a round light. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A real head-scratcher, Tommy Eichenberg in slot 123 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Elijah Jones adds a cornerback and leaves tight end and quarterback untouched.
Christian Jones at slot 132 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kitan Oladapo. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Fabien Lovett at the 159th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Luke McCaffrey in No. 195 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Drake Nugent at par in the Round 6 slot, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They barely believed it either: Frank Gore Jr. still on the board at pick No. 252. A need, and now a little less of one.
