The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Cam Ward, the No. 5 name on the board, sitting there at the 236th overall pick like a gift left on the doorstep. The bottom line is a respectable B+.
With tight end unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The veteran additions, Cam Taylor-Britt chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 30 they get an island corner, and a steal at that.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Wyatt Milum in Round 2, Pick 28, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Somehow Tre Harris was still sitting there in pick 71, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Tai Felton at the Round 3 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board fumbled Ashton Jeanty all the way to the 94th pick, and they scooped it up. The roster fit checks out.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Jahdae Barron while clear needs at tight end sat open.
They will replay Walter Nolen at slot 112 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They robbed the room for Sonny Styles here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Steal is underselling it; Aireontae Ersery at pick 144 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Josaiah Stewart in the Round 7 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They barely believed it either: Dylan Fairchild still on the board at Round 7, Pick 6. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Cam Ward at the 236th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Xavier Restrepo at pick No. 242 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Deontae Lawson in slot 256 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
