Thirty-one other rooms let Tip Reiman slide, and the Commanders were the ones holding the card at the 222nd overall pick. Highway robbery.
If Jones pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 2nd pick they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Michael Penix Jr. at the 39th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They will replay Terrion Arnold at pick No. 40 for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They robbed the room for Cooper Beebe here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They read the board right and Kingsley Suamataia was the payoff at slot 78. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jaden Hicks at Round 3, Pick 37. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They paid up for Cedric Gray at the Round 4 slot when waiting would have done the job. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Johnny Wilson at No. 139 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A tidy bit of business in No. 142, where Christian Jones graded well above the range. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Tommy Eichenberg in pick No. 152 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
The board fumbled Tip Reiman all the way to pick 222, and they scooped it up. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They reached into another round for Matthew Jones, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
