The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: Josiah Trotter, the No. 57 name on the board, sitting there at the 92nd pick like a gift left on the doorstep. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
For all the activity, offensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. The back end got a real overhaul.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 20th overall pick they get a wrecking ball inside. A clean fit for the roster.
Taking Josiah Trotter in Round 3, Pick 28 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Bud Clark at pick 112 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Charles Demmings at the 152nd pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They read the board right and Kevin Coleman Jr. was the payoff at No. 177. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dae'Quan Wright. The roster fit checks out.
