Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Chiefs came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close.
For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain. Spending an early pick on OLB-EDGE with tight end, quarterback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They are betting Solomon proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
Getting Sainristil where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 26 they get protection for the quarterback. The biggest hole, addressed.
Brian Thomas Jr. at Round 2, Pick 4 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid a round early for Dominick Puni in the Round 3 slot, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid sticker price for Michael Hall Jr. in the 79th overall pick, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Mike Sainristil at No. 90 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A curious use of pick No. 100. Tight end, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; an OLB-EDGE in Javon Solomon did not.
They jumped the gun on Johnny Wilson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A conviction pick on Mohamed Kamara at the 123rd pick that the board grades a round light. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Roger Rosengarten in the 127th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Tommy Eichenberg in pick No. 132 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid up for Luke McCaffrey at the Round 5 slot when waiting would have done the job. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Christian Jones slid further than he should have, and No. 143 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
