The Bears bet big and early on Xavier Truss, 39 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. The Starks pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a lead back with juice, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
No drama and no debate, Jihaad Campbell went about where he belonged in No. 39. The roster fit checks out.
Value with a capital V on Malaki Starks in slot 41, a genuine coup. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 98, where Charles Grant graded well above the range. It fills a real need, too.
They paid sticker price for Emery Jones Jr. in the 116th pick, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Logan Brown in Round 4, Pick 33 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A straight-up fair deal on Bhayshul Tuten at the 148th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Isaac TeSlaa in the 233rd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Teddye Buchanan in pick 249 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A big swing on Xavier Truss at No. 252, well ahead of any board in the building. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
