Some picks age like wine; Joe Milton III at pick No. 157 will need to, sitting 44 spots clear of his grade. A weekend to file away and forget, and an F to match.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They have staked the next five years on Jayden Daniels, which is the only story that really matters here.
Liufau falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
In short, a weekend the front office will want to forget in a hurry.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 5 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick 11 they get a double-digit-sack hope at fair value. A real need, handled.
In pick No. 23 they get a long-term starter on the line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 25th pick they get a No. 1 receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In slot 27 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
They liked T'Vondre Sweat enough to skip the value, taking him in the 35th overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They went early on Chris Braswell in No. 36, and the value did not follow. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kamari Lassiter. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in slot 67 is fair value, right on his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Xavier Worthy in the 69th pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Austin Booker in the 78th overall pick, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Taking Mike Sainristil in pick No. 100 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Tommy Eichenberg at Round 4, Pick 8 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A tidy little value on Johnny Wilson in pick 129, a step better than break-even. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Mason McCormick at the 139th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No edge and no loss on Kitan Oladapo in the Round 5 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Value said wait; Joe Milton III in the 157th pick says they were not listening. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They took Dillon Johnson at par in slot 167, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
By-the-book stuff, Tip Reiman at pick No. 177 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They robbed the room for Marist Liufau here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Myles Murphy at pick 222 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
