There is conviction, and then there is this. The Colts took George Gumbs Jr. a full 35 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
Spending an early pick on cornerback with quarterback, running back and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
Kanak at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Brandon Cisse at Round 2, Pick 15 is the proof. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Kyle Louis in slot 78 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
A curious use of No. 113. Quarterback, running back and other spots needed the pick; a cornerback in Devin Moore did not.
This one needs a full-page explanation: George Gumbs Jr. in pick No. 156, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
No drama and no debate, Tyren Montgomery went about where he belonged in pick 214. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board fumbled Jaren Kanak all the way to the 249th pick, and they scooped it up. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Fa'alili Fa'amoe at the Round 7 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
