The Patriots looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Patrick Payton at the Round 6 slot regardless, 46 picks early. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
On value alone, Lane makes the weekend a net positive. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Chris Brazzell II in the Round 1 slot, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Michael Taaffe. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A real head-scratcher, Trey Zuhn III in the 95th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Nice patience on Michael Trigg, who had no business lasting to No. 125. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Taking Ja'Kobi Lane in pick 131 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Demond Claiborne in Round 5, Pick 31 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A need, and now a little less of one.
David Gusta at the Round 6 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jadon Canady in pick No. 198 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A wild overpay on Patrick Payton in pick 202, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
By-the-book stuff, Jeremiah Wright at the 212th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A conviction pick on Jack Kelly at the 247th pick that the board grades a round light. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
