The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Darius Robinson, the No. 39 name on the board, sitting there at No. 68 like a gift left on the doorstep. It washes out to a C, no better and no worse.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
The skill positions did well by the weekend.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get a weapon on the perimeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Bo Nix at the 34th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Taking Darius Robinson in pick No. 68 is close to grand larceny; an edge rusher that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Kingsley Suamataia at the 71st pick is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Sataoa Laumea in Round 5, Pick 1 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It fills a real need, too.
Dwight McGlothern at slot 180 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Circle this one: Tanner McLachlan at pick 231 is a fall that decides a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
