Minnesota Vikings

A solid, sensible weekend for the Vikings: B.

The Vikings clearly saw something nobody else did in Brandon Cleveland, taking him 76 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.

The Scott steal is the beam this whole class leans on. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.18 · Pick 18 · Sonny Styles · LB · rank 11
In pick 18 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece. Need was not the driver here.
R2.30 · Pick 62 · Jake Slaughter · C · rank 58
Nothing to complain about; Jake Slaughter went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.18 · Pick 82 · A.J. Haulcy · S · rank 50
A top-tier safety at a bargain, A.J. Haulcy in the Round 3 slot, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.33 · Pick 97 · Keionte Scott · CB · rank 64
Taking Keionte Scott in the 97th pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Sam Roush · TE · rank 94
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Sam Roush in pick No. 108. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.23 · Pick 163 · Zxavian Harris · DT · rank 156
They did well to land Zxavian Harris in the 163rd overall pick, just ahead of his grade. It fills a real need, too.
R6.15 · Pick 196 · Keagen Trost · OT · rank 186
A quiet steal in Round 6, Pick 15: Keagen Trost for less than the market said. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R7.18 · Pick 234 · Noah Whittington · RB · rank 228
Fair-plus on Noah Whittington, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.19 · Pick 235 · Brett Norfleet · TE · rank 274
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Brett Norfleet. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.28 · Pick 244 · Brandon Cleveland · DE · rank 320
A big swing on Brandon Cleveland at slot 244, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.40 · Pick 256 · PJ Williams · OT · rank 298
PJ Williams at the 256th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
