When the story of this class is written, it opens with Nolan Rucci at slot 234, a reach of 28 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.
Slaughter at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
They read the board right and Sonny Styles was the payoff at pick 20. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Emmanuel McNeil-Warren in the 49th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board fumbled Jake Slaughter all the way to pick No. 82, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Sam Roush at No. 97 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A premium they did not need to pay, Nicholas Singleton a notch or two before his time. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Tacario Davis at the Round 4 slot is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Zxavian Harris at the Round 5 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
By-the-book stuff, VJ Payne at pick 196 squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
