The Eagles looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Evan Williams at Round 5, Pick 36 regardless, 42 picks early.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Getting McCaffrey where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 16th overall pick they get a lockdown presence outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Edgerrin Cooper at Round 2, Pick 18 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A tidy little value on Matt Goncalves in No. 118, a step better than break-even. It fills a real need, too.
Isaac Guerendo at pick 120 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Luke McCaffrey at pick No. 161 is the proof. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They took AJ Barner at par in the 171st pick, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Evan Williams well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid a round early for Gabe Hall in the Round 6 slot, more than the board wanted. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
