When a board-topper like Luke McCaffrey slides to the Round 5 slot, you do not overthink it, and the Cowboys did not. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Edgerrin Cooper at slot 56 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Trey Benson in No. 87 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Steal is underselling it; Luke McCaffrey at pick 174 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Somehow M.J. Devonshire was still sitting there in the Round 6 slot, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A tidy bit of business in Round 7, Pick 13, where Jordan Magee graded well above the range. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They let Frank Gore Jr. come to them and pounced at the 244th pick. It fills a real need, too.
