Call it larceny. Johnny Dixon sat on the board until No. 245, and the Packers did not need to be asked twice.
The Nugent pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Spending an early pick on safety with quarterback, wide receiver and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 29 they get a lockdown presence outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
No drama and no debate, Payton Wilson went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A clean, defensible pick in the 58th pick with a little surplus value in Adisa Isaac. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jaden Hicks a notch or two before his time. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cole Bishop adds a safety and leaves quarterback, wide receiver and other spots untouched.
Good price on Dominick Puni in slot 91, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid a round early for Roger Rosengarten in the 120th overall pick, more than the board wanted. The roster fit checks out.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Isaiah Davis well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Walter Rouse at the 161st overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Drake Nugent at pick 169 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jordan Magee at pick No. 202 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Steal is underselling it; Fabien Lovett at Round 6, Pick 44 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Johnny Dixon in the 245th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
You do not let a running back like Frank Gore Jr. reach the Round 7 slot and blink. They did not. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
