Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Dolphins spent No. 241 on John Morgan III, a name most had 101 spots down the list. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. On value alone, Baker makes the weekend a net positive. The Dolphins indulged a want in Hart while a need in quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots stayed open.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.28
· Pick 28
· Nate Wiggins
· CB
· rank 17
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get an island corner at a price that makes it sweeter. More want than need.
R1.30
· Pick 30
· Troy Fautanu
· OT
· rank 26
In the 30th pick they get an anchor for the offensive line. A real need, handled.
R2.25
· Pick 57
· Jordan Morgan
· OT
· rank 35
Jordan Morgan in the 57th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
R2.30
· Pick 62
· Beaux Limmer
· C
· rank 124
They reached a country mile for Beaux Limmer at the Round 2 slot, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.25
· Pick 88
· Layden Robinson
· OG
· rank 174
They left a pile of value on the table to take Layden Robinson this early at pick 88. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.25
· Pick 125
· James Williams
· S
· rank 120
James Williams at slot 125 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R4.26
· Pick 126
· Cam Hart
· CB
· rank 94
A curious use of the 126th pick. Quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; a cornerback in Cam Hart did not.
R4.28
· Pick 128
· Javon Baker
· WR
· rank 95
A wide receiver of that caliber at No. 128 is the definition of value, full stop. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.8
· Pick 144
· Tommy Eichenberg
· LB
· rank 144
Tommy Eichenberg at the 144th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.22
· Pick 158
· Tanor Bortolini
· C
· rank 217
Value said wait; Tanor Bortolini in slot 158 says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
R6.9
· Pick 184
· LaDarius Henderson
· OT
· rank 246
LaDarius Henderson at pick 184 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It fills a real need, too.
R6.23
· Pick 198
· Matthew Jones
· OG
· rank 254
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Matthew Jones well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.21
· Pick 241
· John Morgan III
· DL-EDGE
· rank 342
John Morgan III at pick No. 241 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
