Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Packers were there to profit. Kalen King, the No. 139 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 5 slot. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Boyd has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th overall pick they get a problem off the edge, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Nice patience on Graham Barton, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A tidy little value on T.J. Tampa in the 58th pick, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Trey Benson in No. 88 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
By-the-book stuff, Dominick Puni at Round 3, Pick 27 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Javon Baker in pick 91 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Josh Newton in slot 126 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They jumped the gun on Khristian Boyd, taking him earlier than his grade liked. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Kalen King at slot 169 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Dwight McGlothern in the 186th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Cornelius Johnson in pick No. 202 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The roster fit checks out.
Caedan Wallace at No. 219 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jordan Magee at pick 245 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Edefuan Ulofoshio in the 255th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
