You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cowboys did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The math is unkind, and the D+ follows.
On value alone, Haulcy makes the weekend a net positive. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the 24th overall pick they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Zion Young at No. 39 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A safety of that caliber at the Round 3 slot is the definition of value, full stop. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Good price on Jalen Farmer in pick 112, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Zxavian Harris in the 152nd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A slide stopped in the Round 5 slot, with Nate Boerkircher worth more than the price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kaleb Elarms-Orr. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Eric McAlister at No. 218 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
