The Cowboys did not so much draft Trajan Jeffcoat as overpay for him, 64 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
The Barton value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get protection for the quarterback. The biggest hole, addressed.
Graham Barton in the 56th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Max Melton in slot 87. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They did well to land Trey Benson in pick 91, just ahead of his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A wild overpay on Jaylan Ford in Round 5, Pick 33, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They went early on Fabien Lovett in the 174th overall pick, and the value did not follow. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Trey Taylor at the 216th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They paid a round early for Jordan Whittington in slot 233, more than the board wanted. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Trajan Jeffcoat this early at the Round 7 slot. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
