You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Packers did exactly that with Sam Hartman in Round 6, Pick 27. A weekend of give and take that grades a C+.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. Melton falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
They left with cornerback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
So much rides on Taliese Fuaga that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 15 they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Payton Wilson at Round 2, Pick 26 squarely in line with his ranking. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dadrion Taylor-Demerson. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Max Melton slid further than he should have, and the Round 3 slot is lovely value for the cornerback. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They took Christian Jones at par in slot 126, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Ty'Ron Hopper at No. 169 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They reached into another round for Sam Hartman, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Value said wait; Kimani Vidal in pick 219 says they were not listening. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No drama and no debate, Kalen DeLoach went about where he belonged in slot 245. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Jalen Sundell slipping to the Round 7 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
