New York Jets

The Jets kept it disciplined and banked a B.

The Jets went off the board in a big way for Logan Fano, 97 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. No fireworks, but a solid B.

Taaffe at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The Jets clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.16 · Pick 16 · Sonny Styles · LB · rank 21
In No. 16 they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker. Need was not the driver here.
R1.24 · Pick 24 · Olaivavega Ioane · OG · rank 22
In slot 24 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
R1.31 · Pick 31 · KC Concepcion · WR · rank 27
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a matchup problem out wide. A real need, handled.
R2.1 · Pick 33 · Denzel Boston · WR · rank 30
Denzel Boston at pick 33 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Chris Johnson · CB · rank 32
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Chris Johnson at pick No. 44. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.31 · Pick 95 · Michael Taaffe · S · rank 68
The board fumbled Michael Taaffe all the way to the 95th overall pick, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Zakee Wheatley · S · rank 85
Zakee Wheatley at pick No. 103 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.7 · Pick 107 · Mason Reiger · LB-EDGE · rank 148
This one needs a full-page explanation: Mason Reiger in slot 107, miles early. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.16 · Pick 116 · Nicholas Singleton · RB · rank 108
Nicholas Singleton slipping to No. 116 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.20 · Pick 120 · Keylan Rutledge · OG · rank 114
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 4 slot with a little surplus value in Keylan Rutledge. It fills a real need, too.
R4.40 · Pick 140 · Joe Royer · TE · rank 127
Value with a capital V on Joe Royer in the 140th overall pick, a genuine coup. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R5.12 · Pick 152 · Skyler Gill-Howard · DT · rank 151
They took Skyler Gill-Howard at par in Round 5, Pick 12, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.15 · Pick 155 · Drew Allar · QB · rank 157
Drew Allar at pick 155 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.20 · Pick 160 · Logan Fano · DE-EDGE · rank 257
Value said wait; Logan Fano in the 160th pick says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.37 · Pick 177 · Bryce Boettcher · LB · rank 172
Bryce Boettcher at Round 5, Pick 37 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
R5.39 · Pick 179 · Zane Durant · DT · rank 179
Zane Durant in the 179th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.14 · Pick 195 · VJ Payne · S · rank 196
No drama and no debate, VJ Payne went about where he belonged in pick No. 195. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.25 · Pick 206 · Ephesians Prysock · CB · rank 190
A slide stopped in slot 206, with Ephesians Prysock worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.12 · Pick 228 · Jimmy Rolder · LB · rank 221
Jimmy Rolder at the 228th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R7.26 · Pick 242 · Dominic Zvada · PK · rank 301
They talked themselves into Dominic Zvada at pick 242, and the board did not agree. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
