The Packers torched the value chart for Baylor Cupp, taking him 102 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. It grades a D+, and the process earned it.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They will answer for taking OLB-EDGE early while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots went begging.
The Rosemy-Jacksaint pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
Kingsley Suamataia in slot 41 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They took Christian Haynes at par in pick No. 58, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jaden Hicks in the 63rd overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They paid up for Will Shipley at the Round 3 slot when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Cam Hart at pick 96, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A premium they did not need to pay, Johnny Wilson a notch or two before his time. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 4 slot on Javon Solomon with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Brandon Coleman at slot 124 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Malik Mustapha. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Value said wait; JD Bertrand in Round 6, Pick 27 says they were not listening. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in pick No. 219 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
Baylor Cupp at the 245th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
A wild overpay on Carson Steele in No. 255, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
