The Packers looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Carson Steele at the Round 7 slot regardless, 71 picks early. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. Spending an early pick on safety with edge rusher and quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. The Gray value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 31st overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
They jumped the gun on Christian Haynes, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A straight-up fair deal on Zach Frazier at the Round 2 slot, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They reached into another round for Jaden Hicks, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A wild overpay on Will Shipley in pick 88, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher and quarterback to take Cole Bishop, a safety that was not the priority.
They liked Cam Hart enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 92. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Theo Johnson at the 94th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The roster fit checks out.
A premium they did not need to pay, Anthony Gould a notch or two before his time. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Cedric Gray at No. 126. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
By-the-book stuff, Malik Mustapha at the 169th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
JD Bertrand at pick No. 202 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
A big swing on Jowon Briggs at slot 219, well ahead of any board in the building. It fills a real need, too.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Evan Anderson. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Carson Steele in Round 7, Pick 35 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
