The move everyone will second-guess came early. The 49ers reached some 39 spots for Seth McGowan, and value like that does not grow back. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Thieneman. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 27 they get a premier pass rusher, reach and all.
Somehow Dillon Thieneman was still sitting there in the 58th overall pick, and they pounced on premier safety value. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Isaiah World in pick 127 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Malik Benson at the Round 4 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Seth McGowan this early at the 138th pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 139 with a little surplus value in Eli Raridon. It fills a real need, too.
