You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The 49ers did exactly that with Joey Aguilar in the 247th overall pick. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The 49ers indulged a want in Igbinosun while a need in edge rusher stayed open. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Bisontis.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 27 they get an island corner, outstanding value to boot. More want than need.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 35 with a little surplus value in Chris Brazzell II. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Taking Anthony Hill Jr. in No. 58 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Michael Taaffe at slot 91 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Chase Bisontis at the 95th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Michael Trigg in the 127th pick, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Davison Igbinosun adds a cornerback and leaves edge rusher untouched.
A tidy little value on DeMonte Capehart in No. 138, a step better than break-even. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took CJ Daniels at par in the Round 4 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Dametrious Crownover in Round 5, Pick 2 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Gracen Halton at pick No. 144 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nice patience on Chris McClellan, who had no business lasting to the 147th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They liked Pat Coogan enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 187. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kaelon Black. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Nothing to complain about; Jimmy Rolder went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid sticker price for Eli Heidenreich in pick No. 223, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They reached into another round for Joey Aguilar, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
