Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The 49ers spent pick 127 on Reggie Virgil, a name the board had a full 38 spots lower.
The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They banked enough surplus on Delp to cover a lot of smaller sins. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
The dealing was even money, start to finish.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 27 they get the heartbeat of the defense at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Connor Lew. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Mikail Kamara in the 125th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster fit checks out.
Reggie Virgil at the 127th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They took Hezekiah Masses at par in the Round 4 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
No edge and no loss on J.C. Davis in slot 138; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A tidy bit of business in pick 139, where Oscar Delp graded well above the range. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
