The trade table was a mismatch, and the 49ers were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
They will need Proctor to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. Hurst at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Blake Miller at slot 57 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reach for Michael Taaffe in the 58th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Malachi Lawrence in the Round 2 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It fills a real need, too.
A slide stopped in pick No. 91, with Skyler Bell worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Ted Hurst slipping to No. 127 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A tidy little value on Davison Igbinosun in pick 133, a step better than break-even. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
J.C. Davis at Round 4, Pick 38 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached a country mile for Kaleb Proctor at the 139th pick, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Marlin Klein went about where he belonged in pick 165. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Zavion Thomas in the Round 7 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
