Nobody had George Gumbs Jr. this high, and it is not close. The 49ers reached 55 spots to get him at Round 4, Pick 39.
That Johnson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 27 they get a ballhawk on the back end. Need was not the driver here.
No drama and no debate, Christen Miller went about where he belonged in the 58th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Emmett Johnson at the 127th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Malik Benson in Round 4, Pick 33 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Beau Stephens this early at pick No. 138. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They reached into another round for George Gumbs Jr., and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
