The search is over. The Raiders handed the keys to Fernando Mendoza, and the whole operation now runs on his development. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. Getting Branch where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Coogan has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.1
· Pick 1
· Fernando Mendoza
· QB
· rank 4
In pick 1 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
R2.16
· Pick 48
· Gennings Dunker
· OT
· rank 49
By-the-book stuff, Gennings Dunker at the 48th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R2.24
· Pick 56
· Caleb Banks
· DL
· rank 41
Caleb Banks at No. 56 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.3
· Pick 67
· Christen Miller
· DL
· rank 56
Christen Miller in the 67th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.6
· Pick 70
· Jacob Rodriguez
· LB
· rank 72
A straight-up fair deal on Jacob Rodriguez at pick No. 70, value and slot in agreement. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R3.15
· Pick 79
· Zachariah Branch
· WR
· rank 61
Zachariah Branch at the Round 3 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.36
· Pick 100
· Skyler Bell
· WR
· rank 84
Nice patience on Skyler Bell, who had no business lasting to slot 100. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.2
· Pick 102
· Jalon Kilgore
· CB
· rank 100
No edge and no loss on Jalon Kilgore in Round 4, Pick 2; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.17
· Pick 117
· Malik Muhammad
· CB
· rank 99
Somehow Malik Muhammad was still sitting there in the 117th pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.34
· Pick 134
· Jakobe Thomas
· S
· rank 140
They took Jakobe Thomas at par in No. 134, which is nothing to complain about. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R5.35
· Pick 175
· Aamil Wagner
· OT
· rank 174
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Aamil Wagner. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.4
· Pick 185
· Pat Coogan
· C
· rank 199
The board had cheaper options than Pat Coogan at the 185th overall pick, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.27
· Pick 208
· Kaelon Black
· RB
· rank 217
A reach on Kaelon Black in the Round 6 slot; the board had better options right there. The roster fit checks out.
R7.3
· Pick 219
· Keyshaun Elliott
· LB
· rank 219
Keyshaun Elliott in Round 7, Pick 3 is fair value, right on his grade. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
