If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Chiefs, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.
They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Mayes pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. If Coleman pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
DeMarcus Lawrence gives the group a proven body among the projects.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get a matchup problem out wide, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They took Jermaine Burton at par in the 57th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dominick Puni. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Jaden Hicks at No. 125, value and slot in agreement. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Nice patience on BJ Mayes, who had no business lasting to slot 167. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Ashton Gillotte in the Round 5 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Theo Johnson in the 175th pick, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Graham Mertz at pick 212 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
