They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Commanders' quarterback, full stop. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Magee. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They will need Cooper to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 6th pick they get a long-term answer under center. A clean fit for the roster.
They let Jordan Morgan come to them and pounced at No. 36. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reach on Edgerrin Cooper in the Round 2 slot; the board had better options right there. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Kris Jenkins at Round 2, Pick 20 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No edge and no loss on Javon Bullard in pick No. 67; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Bucky Irving at pick 84 is a conviction pick that outran the value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No drama and no debate, Dominick Puni went about where he belonged in slot 100. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They took Jacob Cowing at par in the 102nd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Marshawn Kneeland at pick No. 107 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Cole Bishop in the Round 5 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
By-the-book stuff, Michael Barrett at pick 181 squarely in line with his ranking. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Ethan Driskell at the 191st overall pick is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Somehow Jordan Magee was still sitting there in No. 223, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
