The Packers clearly saw something nobody else did in Ty'Ron Hopper, taking him 61 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. It is not that Hopper is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a true top target. A clean fit for the roster.
No drama and no debate, T.J. Tampa went about where he belonged in pick No. 41. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A straight-up fair deal on Edgerrin Cooper at the 57th pick, value and slot in agreement. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent pick 88 on Ty'Ron Hopper, a linebacker they were not short of.
Zak Zinter in slot 91 is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jarrian Jones at No. 125 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A tidy little value on James Williams in the 135th overall pick, a step better than break-even. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
