They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Zion Nelson, 39 picks early at pick 217.
They will answer for taking DT-EDGE early while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots went begging. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. Allen falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
They left with cornerback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a rangy last line of defense. Need was not the driver here.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyler Guyton. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took Edgerrin Cooper at par in pick No. 57, which is nothing to complain about. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Trey Benson in pick 67 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A want over a need in slot 92: Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
They let Braelon Allen come to them and pounced at the Round 4 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Cam Hart at the 135th pick, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
By-the-book stuff, Andrew Raym at Round 6, Pick 28 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A wild overpay on Zion Nelson in slot 217, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
