There is reaching, and then there is Patrick Payton at the Round 5 slot. The Chiefs jumped the board by 68 and dared it to prove them wrong.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. On value alone, Stowers makes the weekend a net positive.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 9 they get a weapon on the perimeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the 29th overall pick they get a three-down second-level presence at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
They let Chris Johnson come to them and pounced at the 40th pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Eli Stowers in slot 74, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reach on Jude Bowry in pick No. 109; the board had better options right there. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A big swing on Bryce Boettcher at Round 5, Pick 8, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They did well to land Albert Regis in No. 169, just ahead of his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They reached a country mile for Patrick Payton at the 176th pick, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They took Kaelon Black at par in pick 210, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
