For all the boxes ticked, the Cowboys skipped the loudest one: linebacker is exactly as bare as it was. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
They banked enough surplus on Thomas to cover a lot of smaller sins. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
Nothing to complain about; Mansoor Delane went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
In slot 20 they get a double-digit-sack hope. More want than need.
Jonah Coleman in Round 3, Pick 28 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
No edge and no loss on Brian Parker II in No. 112; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jakobe Thomas is a better player than the 152nd overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor itch, scratched.
They paid sticker price for Trey Moore in pick 177, and that is fine. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Eric Rivers slipping to the Round 5 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
