Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Commanders spent the Round 3 slot on Que Robinson, a name the board had a full 173 spots lower.
Gordon II falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. They trusted the board more than the depth chart.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
Nick Emmanwori slipping to the Round 1 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Que Robinson well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jayden Higgins in pick No. 79. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Mason Taylor in the 105th overall pick, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They robbed the room for Ozzy Trapilo here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Circle this one: O'Donnell Fortune at the 148th pick is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick No. 171 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Ollie Gordon II at the 207th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
LaJohntay Wester at slot 229 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Thor Griffith in pick 238 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
They jumped the gun on Nick Martin, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A minor itch, scratched.
